Abstract
Targeted drug delivery (TDD) systems have emerged as a transformative strategy in modern medicine, aiming to improve the efficacy of treatments while minimizing side effects. Traditional drug delivery systems often fail to provide sufficient concentration of therapeutics at the disease site, resulting in suboptimal treatment outcomes. The integration of nanotechnology, biomaterials, and molecular biology into TDD has enabled the development of highly sophisticated delivery systems that can deliver drugs selectively to target tissues or cells, particularly in the context of cancer, neurological disorders, and cardiovascular diseases. This review provides an in-depth analysis of the current state of TDD systems, including the types of delivery vehicles (e.g., nanoparticles, liposomes, and polymeric systems), their mechanisms of action, and their clinical applications. Despite the promising potential of TDD, challenges such as biocompatibility, targeting specificity, regulatory hurdles, and cost-effectiveness remain significant. Nonetheless, ongoing advances in technology and research are paving the way for the future of personalized medicine. This review also highlights the potential of TDD systems in the era of precision medicine, offering insights into their future directions.
